A periodontist is a specially trained dentist who deals with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontists also provide the most sophisticated treatment methods for oral inflammation. Periodontists typically receive extensive training in many areas of dental treatment, including three years of additional education beyond basic dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, as well as many amazing cosmetic procedures.
Periodontists usually treat more problematic issues like severe gum disease or problems caused by a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide variety of treatments, like scaling, root planing, or root surface debridement. They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using effective surgical procedures. Most importantly, periodontists are specially trained in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. This can help ensure that you are getting advanced, high-quality treatment for replacement of missing or damaged teeth.
In some instances, periodontal needs can be met and sufficiently handled by a general dentist. However, if you are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease or other chronic diseases, periodontal treatment may be necessary to restore and protect your smile. Moreover, patients with moderate or severe periodontal disease, or patients with more complex issues, can be best served by a partnership between a dentist and a periodontist.
During the first visit, your periodontist will review your complete medical and dental histories. It is critical that you let your periodontist know if you are taking any medications or if you are getting treatment for any conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.
Next, your periodontist will examine your gums to see if there is any recession, as well as to assess how the teeth fit together. Your teeth will also be checked to see if any are loose and a probe will be placed between your teeth and gums to determine the depth of spaces known as periodontal pockets. All of this will help your periodontist assess the health of your teeth and gums. X-rays or CT scans may also be taken for further evaluation.
